In January 2021, the “STEM Under the Stars” project secured an initial grant of $4,860 from Inspiring South Australia. This initiative aimed to establish a science module for community outreach, focusing on astronomy and terrestrial research. The project includes the study of extremophiles, microorganisms, geological features, and more. The laboratory, housed in a purchased 20ft container, will serve as a self-sufficient, renewable energy-powered workspace. The project involves outfitting the container with sinks, benches, and cupboards.

Key Steps:

  • Purchase a 20ft container for $2,200 from Roxby Downs Area School.
  • Sourcing materials for outfitting, including stainless steel sinks and benches.
  • Transportation from Roxby Downs to Andamooka by Mine Tech Engineering.
  • Collaboration with skilled trades personnel for outfitting.
  • Extremophile research conducted by the Woomera Observatory and Andamooka Observatory teams exploring microbial life, fossilised formations, and stromatolites.
  • Prepare a pop-up science event inside the container, serving as a science centre and eco-classroom.
  • Utilisation of renewable energy sources with a Goal Zero Yeti 400 Solar Generator and Goal Zero Nomad 100 portable solar panel.
  • The current location is Roxby Downs Area School for preparation by Mine Tech Engineering.

“STEM Under the Stars” featured a public outreach astronomy event at Historic Cottages Opal Creek Boulevard, including science and space art exhibitions, UV light displays, talks with local scientists and geologists, palaeontology exhibits, drone and robotics displays, rocketry displays, and first aid demonstrations. The initiative emphasises engagement in STEM fields and offers the community an interactive and educational experience.
