Bushman, opal miner, author and Curator of the Andamooka Opal Showroom Underground Opal & Mineral Museum. Peter ‘the Oracle’ Taubers is an Outback tourism pioneer, adventurer, entrepreneur, historian, opal cutter and jeweller. Peter and partner Margot Duke are long term residents of Andamooka, Margot is a legend in the tourism and accommodation industry and has lived in Andamooka for over 50 years.

Over 40 years of opal mining has taken Peter far and wide across the Australian Opal Fields. Margot and Peter have won many tourism and business awards for the Flinders Ranges and Outback Region, together, they are well known for their fundraising efforts in the local community and the Royal Flying Doctors.

Originally from Port Lincoln, Peter spent much of his working life in the Outback, prospecting and mining in Andamooka, White Dam and the Stuarts Creek Opal Fields. He has consulted on Native Title Mining Agreements, Andamooka Precious Stones Field Indigenous Land Use Agreement and the Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA).

Peter is an advocate for ethical, environment and socially responsible opal mining and has represented the industry at SAOMAI (South Australian Opal Miners Association Inc.) and APOMA (Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association Inc.)

Many visiting tourists are inspired to become new Andamooka Opal Miners by Peter’s extremely popular book and DVD ‘Andamooka Opal and Surrounding Area’.

The Andamooka Opal Showroom Underground Opal & Mineral Museum includes the local Post Office, Dukes Bottlehouse Motel, laundromat, weather station, café-restaurant, replica opal mine and an underground opal information/conference centre / art gallery that includes one of Australia’s finest gemstone and opal book collections. The Andamooka Opal Showroom Underground Opal & Mineral Museum is a major Andamooka tourist attraction and the home of Karkaroo a opalsied baby Andamooka Plesiosaur that attracts thousands of tourists each year.
