As of August 2025, there are 173 registered opal claims in Andamooka, 465 in Coober Pedy, 11 in Mintabie and 1 in Stuart Creek, giving a total of 650 active opal claims across SA. In November 2021, there were 541 active claims across South Australia (of which 120 were in Andamooka, 403 in Coober Pedy and 16 in Mintabie).
This represents a 44% increase in opal claims at Andamooka over the past four years, making it one of Australia’s fastest-growing opal fields.
