Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, with a high-quality photo of the Andamooka Opal, also known as the Queen’s Opal, at the Andamooka Underground Art Gallery. In 2024, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Andamooka Opal being presented to Queen Elizabeth on her first authorised state trip to Australia in 1954.
This renowned opal, weighing 203 carats and shaped like an oval, was part of a stunning necklace adorned with 180 diamonds and a delicate filigree design. The opal was discovered in Andamooka in 1949.
Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Hon David Ridgway, Agent General for South Australia, the Andamooka Opal Fields Tourism Association (AOFTA) obtained official permission to use the images from St James Palace, The Royal Collection Trust.
The Royal Family and the St James Palace Royal Collection Trust approved using the Andamooka Opal Image for the following purposes.
